MG ZS EV electric breaks cover, launch in January 2020

MG ZS EV has a claimed range of 340km and can be charged in 50 minutes via 50kW DC charger

The British car brand, MG Motors has taken the wraps off the MG ZS EV for the Indian market. In the international markets, the MG ZS also comes with petrol and diesel engine options but in India, only the electric version will be launched. The ZS EV is targetted at the Hyundai Kona which already got more than 300 bookings since it was launched in India.

The 5-seater electric SUV gets an electric motor which develops 143bhp and 353Nm of twisting force. Powering the motor is a hefty 44.5kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack. The company claims that battery has a sophisticated management system along with IP 67 rated, 1-metre water resistance. There are three driving modes on the new MG ZS EV to take on the different moods of the driver.

With the rated power output, ZS EV can clock a 0 to 100 kmph sprint in claimed 8.5 seconds and the top speed is rated at 150 kmph. The lithium-ion battery pack can be charged from 0 to 80% in just 50 minutes. The company will set up a 7.4kW AC charger at owner’s home or office for the sake of convenience. This 7.4kW charger will charge the ZS EV in about 8 hours. Other than these two options, the EV also has an on-board charging cable which can be plugged into a wall socket.

ZS EV will come with an updated touchscreen infotainment system from the Hector which company loves to call as smart EV 2.0. This system will have an inbuilt SIM card for 4G connectivity. Not only this, the infotainment will be able to connect to Home Wi-Fi of Mobile hotspot for internet access. MG has tied up with TomTom, Gaana, and Accuweather to provide navigation, music, and weather services on the go. There will be a real-time CO2 saver display in the SUV which will display the amount of CO2 saved by the owner as they drive.

In the begining, the ZS EV will be available only in five cities – Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad. Production of the car will take place in company’s Halol plant in Gujarat. Speaking about the price, the ZS electric will be priced under the Hyundai Kona’s 23.6 lakh
