Is this the new Maruti Alto? Our expectation running high

New Maruti Alto

Maruti Suzuki could bring a completely new model replacing the current Maruti Alto, expected launch in 2020

Maruti Suzuki has already cleared that its entry-level model Maruti Alto won’t be on sale post-2019. The popular small hatchback won’t meet upcoming crash test norms. However, considering Alto’s sales performance we might see a completely new model coming to the Indian market. The next-gen Alto is ready for its global debut in October 2019 and it could roll out here in 2020.

A new Maruti Alto is always a high possibility in India. The Alto has been the direct successor of iconic Maruti 800. Available in both 800cc and 1.0-litre engine displacement variants, the Maruti Alto contributes maximum retail number in the brand’s total sales every year. While the brand is yet to confirm the launch of new generation Alto here, expectation about its launch is running high.

New Maruti Alto

The current global-spec Suzuki Alto is a completely different car, compared to the India-spec Maruti Alto. Available across global markets since October 23014, the car is available with a 660cc engine. The new-gen Alto gets a Heartect platform, which will easily meet the upcoming crash test norms in India. This same underpinning is available in the newly launched Maruti Suzuki WagonR, present Maruti Swift and Dzire.

If the new Alto launches in India, it will certainly offer better driveability and stability compared to the outgoing model. We might see the car appearing at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo and launch afterwards. For the Indian market, it could be available with a 1.0-litre engine complying with upcoming BS6 emission norms. As the demands for petrol cars is increasing and BS6 emission norms will help in increasing that, a new Maruti Alto is always a possibility.

Maruti Suzuki is slowly updating its cheaper models with new features. Hence, the new Maruti Alto too could receive the same. Also, there would be safety features like dual front airbags and ABS as standard. But, this will be slightly pricier compared to the current Alto available in India.
