Maruti Ciaz gets a new 1.5-litre diesel engine would eventually make its way into models like Ertiga, S-Cross and Vitara Brezza

A new 1.5-litre diesel engine ingeniously developed by Maruti Suzuki has been a hot topic for discussion for quite some time. The automaker has now introduced the engine to its premium midsize sedan Ciaz. Besides the existing Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine, the new bigger and better motor will be available as an option for the sedan from now on.

With the upcoming BS-VI emission norms in India from next year, Fiat has decided to discontinue the widely popular 1.3-litre diesel motor. Hence, Maruti Suzuki had to develop a new engine that will be BS-VI ready and capable to power other cars as well. The new in-house developed 1.5-litre engine comes addressing the issue and it generates more power and torque compared to the current 1.3-litre diesel unit. However, mileage has been reduced in the new engine.

The new 1.5-litre diesel engine produces 94 bhp and 225 Nm of power and torque respectively. On the other hand, the existing 1.3-litre engine pumps out 89 bhp and 200 Nm. The new engine returns 26.82 kmpl of mileage compared to the 1.3-litre unit’s 28.09 kmpl. Even if the fuel efficiency in the new engine has dipped, the Ciaz diesel remains the best fuel efficient car in its segment.

This new engine is currently BS-IV compliant but ready to be converted into BS-VI compliance. It doesn’t get the SHVS mild-hybrid technology like the 1.3-litre unit. Available in Delta, Zeta and Alpha trim options, the Maruti Ciaz 1.5-litre diesel comes priced between Rs 9.97 lakh and Rs 11.37 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
